How Are the UN Sustainable Development Goals Relevant to Business?

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Worldwide Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 and represent an unprecedented global consensus to achieving a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable society for all by 2030.

At the heart of this comprehensive agenda are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which clearly define where we collectively need to go and how to get there.

The 17 SDGs acknowledge that actions in one area will have an impact on outcomes in others and that development must balance social, economic, and environmental sustainability. To achieve the SDGs in every context, all of society's creativity, know-how, technology, and financial resources must be mobilised.

Why do the Sustainable Development Goals matter for business?

The SDGs represent a major opportunity for businesses to make a positive impact, with the ability to start today. The private sector is an indispensable partner and all companies can play a role, no matter how large or small, regardless of their industry. This means that we, through our business, politics and personal endeavours, can all contribute to sustainably developing our planet.

Making a positive impact is not achieved merely by the big efforts of the few, but rather by the sum of all the endeavours of many. Having the obligation of a better world together means that defining your scope is critical for success.

The SDGs can create value for business

Climate change, water and food crisis, poverty and conflict - need solutions that the private sector can deliver, representing a growing market for business innovation.

The SDGs represent a great opportunity for businesses to shape and communicate their strategies and activities, allowing them to capitalise on various benefits such as generating new revenue through innovation, employer attractiveness, spawning investor interest and being “ahead of the curve” by addressing regulatory compliance and managing risks.
